Manufacture and Distribution of Parastep I Systems
W.A.L.K. will oversee operational activities of the Parastep I system and other newly developed FDA-approved devices for people with neurological and musculoskeletal disorders who are in need of and can benefit from the use of such devices. The Parastep I is a non-invasive FDA-approved patented (the patents have expired) microcomputer-controlled functional electrical stimulation system that enables unbraced standing and short-distance walking by upper-motor-neuron-injured paraplegics and some incomplete quadriplegics. WALK will ensure distribution of these devices to all individuals including to those in need of financial assistance, thus furthering WALK’s charitable purpose of improving the quality of life of persons with muscoloskeletal and neurological disorders.
Fundraising for Research Purposes
The organization will solicit money and contributions from private organizations, corporations, non-profit organizations, and municipal, state and federal sources with the purpose of continuing research into neurological and musculoskeletal disorders including, but not limited to, multiple sclerosis (“MS”), stroke, cerebrovascular accident (“CVA”), hemiplegia, paraplegia, quadriplegia, cerebral palsy (“CP”), muscular dystrophy (“MD”), and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (“ALS”). Such research is aimed at improving the quality of life of adults and children with these neurological and musculoskeletal disorders.
Raising Awareness
The organization will raise public awareness about neurological and musculoskeletal disorders through the distribution of literature, public speaking engagements, academic publishing and our website. We believe that this information will help patients understand the health and mental benefits of walking and how the Parastep I system can be an integral part of their healthy lifestyle after injury or disease. The organization will also provide education and resources to the general public regarding these disorders
Resource Center
The organization will set up an online resource center, available to providers and patients to fund, promote, and foster more in-depth academic cooperation and collaborative clinical research among medical research institutions and universities and experts in the various fields of neurological and musculoskeletal disorders. Deseminating this information will help WALK fulfill its mission to serve those in need. Expert outside opinion will be sought to ensure the resource center is accurate and up to date.
Collaboration with Medical Organizations
The organization will collaborate with Sigmedics for the purpose of providing devices to those in need of aid with neurological or musculoskeletal disorders that are of interest to the organization.
